A shoe is not a single unit. It becomes a shoe when several different components are assembled. Large Size Shoes for Men has compiled a brief description of these various shoe components. There are seven basic components in a finished shoe, each has it's own design and function. The fit and performance of a shoe is dependent upon the design and quality of it's seperate components.
Quarter
The quarter is essentially the back half of the shoe. The quarter is composed of several separate pieces which when joined together form the quarter. In better-grade shoes the quarter is made in two seperate pieces, left and right. The rear part of the quarter houses the shoes counter.
Vamp
The vamp is the front of the shoes upper. It can consist of one or more pattern pieces, vamp patterns come in countless designs.
Throat or Throatline
This is the connecting line between the vamp and the counter. Quite simply it is where the two top pieces of the shoe are sewn together, usually just behind the toes and forward of the instep.
Shank
The shank is the bridge between the heel and the ball area of the shoe. The higher the heel, the higher, narrower and more curved the shank. They are made of steel, wood and plastic.
Heel Seat
The heel seat is the area in the heel of the shoe where the heel of the foot rests. They are available in many different types, cupped, flat, cushioned or slanted.
Toe Box
The toe box is the "roof" of the toe end of the shoe. It's shape and height is determined by the shoes design and is very important to comfort and fit.
Topline
The topline is the top rim of the shoe's quarter. It must hug the foot and yet not be so ridgid as to cause rubbing and discomfort.
